I’m a butoh dancer.
Free improvisation, to me, stands as the most genuine and intimate manifestation of dance expression, mirroring the complexities of real life itself. In this art form, the artists can draws upon the reservoir of their past dance/music learnings, life experiences and performance encounters, amassed over the years, but at the same time they will try to break out of their own patterns, and remain completely open to listening the energy of the space, the music and the audience, to feel the here and now that is unique and it happen only one time.
In the Zen Buddhism there is a word “Ichigo-ichie” used to indicate a unique moment in life. Having awareness of Ichigo-ichie means knowing that every experience we live is a treasure that will never be repeated in the same way. In the realm of free improvisation, there exists no refuge for concealment; authenticity reigns supreme.
In the last few years, after pandemic, I embarked on a gradual voyage of discovery, unveiling the marvel and allure concealed within this practice. In the realm of free improvisation, I enter on the stage with the exciting, frightening and exhilarating uncertainty of what lies ahead. An embodiment of the changing nature of our own existence.
