Open dialogues

– why have a conversation whose outcome is certain? Why talk about the same topics over and over again when the content is inexhaustible? Why constantly repeat yourself in conversations and always tell the same story, even if slightly modified?
If you transfer these and similar questions to the level of music, there is the solution of free improvisation if you are interested in a high degree of spontaneity, variety and flexibility. But Chanda Rule and Martin Reiter also invite another important quality into their musical dialogs: the greatest possible authenticity.
Where there is no preconceived framework to rely on, no given harmonies, no fixed lyrics, no previous versions, there is no danger of “repeating oneself” – music can only be created absolutely in the moment – in the total now. Of course, the two performers cannot deny their backgrounds, Rule cannot deny her American roots in the gospel and soul music of the churches and Reiter cannot deny his great interest in jazz, but here they consciously avoid playing with clichés or pretentiously reaching into the bag of tricks of licks in order to impress superficially. Rule and Reiter open themselves up as channels to a flow of music, which they let pass without judgment or expectation and take the audience with them into the flow of spheres of sound, tension and relaxation.
